Khula Community Projects
The Genesis-Khula Community project (Khula) is a community initiative in Mahlabathini, a under resourced rural area in Ezinqoleni in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Khula grew out of the vision of Pastor Joseph and Jabu Ndovela for the local church to serve its community particularly helping the children who are hungry, sick and in need of care.
In response to the number of children in the Mahlabathini area without parents, food, clothing and homes largely as a result of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Khula established in 2006 to an after-school feeding programme for children, a day care (crèche) for babies and toddlers and a community vegetable garden.
In 2009 "Zulu Aids Hilfe e.V.", a German assciation, joined and with their support the Khula Community Centre was built, and officially opened in May 2011. The centre is run by the community and given managerial and financial support by Genesis.
Khula started with feeding 13 children, and since then the number has grown to over 70 children receiving a meal five days a week! The day care started with 6 children, and has subsequently grown to more than 40 children under the age of 6!
With the logistical help of an American dentist, Dr Mike Fisher, a dental practice was set up to operate twice a month at Khula. He and his contacts blessed us with excellent equipment and we experienced good cooperation with the Department of Health who provide a dentist once every two weeks. The facility is alleviating a desperate need in the community for dental health services.
Khula’s vision is to provide wider social, educational and health programmes for the children, and to assist the community access healthcare and income generating opportunities.
