In a country filled with unemployment this program offered by Genesis Work 4 Living, an outreach of Genesis Youth, Marburg, offers new hope and opportunity to the surrounding community.
The program is simple: It offers a 12-day workshop intensive that takes participants through a range of skills, which could equip them for jobs ranging from cashiers, receptionists, merchandising, as well as, basic computer skills. It only costs R100 and includes an exciting them of how to start your own business. The students are given R50 and are put to work creating a small business. Ideas are brainstormed in class and the participants then go and create their own businesses; they need to submit a business plan and show their profit.
Some of the themes offered in the program are:
Genesis Work 4 a Living boasts some wonderful success stories. Upon completion of the course individuals have received jobs at a supermarket, as a satellite installer, as cashiers, packers, and running a warehouse stock. Some of the participants were so success with running their R50 small businesses, they have continued to grow and are now are able to support themselves.
What is really remarkable about this program is employers can call Genesis Work 4 a Living and have potential employees recommended without paying. It is all designed to uplift the local community and not make profit.
The program can accommodate up to 30 students and up to 10 students wanting a more intense computer course. Lindiwe Shusha and Angel Mquadi are the facilitators. Both completed the course themselves, and find the work rewarding, seeing the transformation of the students once they complete the program. They see a transformation in the students as they become more confident and skilled.
While this workforce empowerment initiative cannot guarantee employment, it advertises its services in local newspapers. When employers call Lindiwe and Angel match the right candidate to a specific job opportunity. Reports back from employers have been wonderful. They have been impressed with the skills and attitudes shown by their new employees.
